A Blend of Functionality and Coziness

In the neighbourhood of Østerbro, Copenhagen, restaurateur Mikkel Egelund and his wife Jill Marie Zimsen transformed their townhouse kitchen into a space that balances professional efficiency with warmth and a sense of community. Inspired by classic country kitchens, they chose light ash wood and a stainless-steel worktop, centering the design around Garde Hvalsøe’s Minimal model.

The kitchen features industrial elements like raw steel shelves and a pot rack, alongside personal touches such as glass pieces by Helle Mardahl, collected ceramics from trips abroad and photographic art to contrast the light tones of the kitchen.

Light blue striped tiles and cream-toned painted cabinets from File Under Pop create a seamless flow into the living areas, where a muted color palette is accented by bolder tones like burnt red and light pink.

Designed as the heart of the home, the kitchen connects indoor and outdoor spaces, with a glass conservatory dining area leading to the garden. For Mikkel and Jill, their kitchen is a testament to the transformative power of thoughtful design and a reminder that the true essence of a home lies in the moments shared around the kitchen table.
