Thatched Summer House

Along the Danish coast, where landscape and architecture meet, stands the thatched summer house. The project was developed in close collaboration with KHR Architecture, united by a shared ambition to create a home where materials, craftsmanship and architecture are conceived as a single whole.

Architecture and craftsmanship are conceived as a single narrative, shaped by the site, the materials and the people who will live in the house.

Architecture and craftsmanship are conceived as a single narrative, shaped by the site, the materials and the people who will live in the house. The house unfolds gradually. The entrance is discreetly positioned at the corner of the building, leading alongside large glazed openings towards the heart of the house, where the kitchen is seamlessly integrated into the space. From here, the house opens into the double-height dining and living area with views across the surrounding landscape.

At the heart of the living space sits a yellow kitchen. The colour was chosen by KHR Architecture in dialogue with the surrounding landscape, inspired by the grasses that turn golden in the summer sun.

Through Garde Hvalsøe Atelier, the bespoke joinery was developed in close collaboration with KHR Architecture. Each element is conceived as an integral part of the architecture.

The bespoke joinery follows the house from arrival to retreat. The entrance furniture, bed and bedside table, bathroom cabinetry, and the integrated bunk beds in the guest wing are all crafted from Oregon Pine, treated with a white-pigmented oil that lightens the timber while allowing the grain to remain clearly visible. The wardrobes and sliding doors carry the same yellow tone as the kitchen, connecting the two wings of the house.

In the kitchen, the yellow is paired with more substantial materials. The natural stone of the island extends down the end panel, while the stainless steel worktop folds up around the oven and hob. The materials meet with precision, reinforcing the architectural character of the joinery.
